Spirals for the Art Pavilion 1 and 2 were created one year apart for two conceptually distinct exhibitions in the same space. The first spiral, realized on the floor of the elevated ground level of the Art Pavilion, was composed of river sand and gold pigment. The second spiral was created a year later in the basement of the Pavilion, which in the meantime had undergone a transformation and been converted into a restaurant, and was made of river gravel.
The spiral form of the installations reinterpreted the Pavilion’s space while simultaneously respecting its structural integrity. By introducing and interpolating new material and form into the historic building, I sought to connect past and present and to create communication and dialogue between them. The intervention was reversible: the sand and gravel were removed without damaging the space and returned to their natural environment.
